The Elektra debut by the late bluesman John Campbell, One Believer was a bold outlier against virtually every trend on major labels and in pop at the time of its release. Alongside Chris Whitley's Living with the Law, it stood as one of only two roots records issued on a major label in 1991, a remarkable distinction in an era dominated by mainstream commercial sounds.
A deeply atmospheric record, One Believer is filled with subtle shimmering organs and warm guitar textures that accent the dreamy, haunting side of the blues rather than the crunchy stomp and roll that Campbell was known for in the clubs — and would later display on his follow-up, Howlin' Mercy. Tracks like "Angel of Sorrow," "World of Trouble," and "Wild Streak" conjure shimmering ambient textures from which the blues seem to emerge from the ether itself. Living and working in New York at the time, Campbell's music carries the unmistakable influence of that late-night urban environment, beautiful songs tempered in shadow and restraint, yet baring their teeth at all the right moments.
On "Couldn't Do Nothin'," "Devil In My Closet," and "Person to Person," the roadhouse magic comes alive. The album closes with "Take Me Down" and the haunting title track, both menacing in conviction and creepy-swampy in execution, leaving a lasting impression that few blues records of any era can match.
