A limited edition white and red splatter pressing of Frankenstein (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film) by Alexandre Desplat, one of just 6,000 units in this retail first pressing. Since Mary Shelley's groundbreaking novel was published in 1818, Frankenstein has inspired countless cinematic adaptations and, from them, some of the most exceptional film music ever composed. Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is the latest entry in that lineage, and Alexandre Desplat's score is its perfect accompaniment. In their third collaboration, following The Shape of Water (2017) and Pinocchio (2022), the pair have conjured an electrifying balance of lyricism and emotional depth that conveys both the wonder and tragedy at the heart of Shelley's classic tale.
Desplat's score opens with a hauntingly beautiful seven-note motif for Victor Frankenstein himself, accompanied by ghostly female choral voices and a low electronic pulse that serves as shorthand for the life-giving power at the story's center. Eldbjørg Hemsing's solo violin carries the score from the beauty of nature into the beauty of melancholy, while the creature's own themes are surprisingly enchanting, tender and searching at birth, shifting toward deep reflection as both creator and creation descend into their personal tragedy. An almost euphoric waltz scores the building of Victor's experiment, and a four-note motif on plucked strings with solo piano represents the creature with unexpected delicacy. The score closes with a glorious reprisal of its themes, a showcase of Desplat's craft and del Toro's vision — gorgeous, thoughtful, and a worthy evolution of one of cinema's most enduring stories.
