Guillermo del Toro's Blade II (2002) is a genre landmark, and Marco Beltrami's score is a major reason why. This double LP expands the original 33-minute Varèse Sarabande release to a 38-track, 97-minute program, nearly tripling the content and making it the definitive edition of one of Beltrami's most aggressive, inventive scores.
The music matches del Toro's vision: full orchestra and choir drive the symphonic action-horror, while taiko drums and shakuhachi reflect del Toro's anime influences, and collaborations with DJ Danny Saber weave in electronica. It was the second of three pairings between del Toro and Beltrami, following Mimic and preceding Hellboy.
For collectors, this is the rare expanded score that makes the theatrical release feel like a rough cut, a complete musical work that was never fully heard until now, preserved exactly as it was pressed.
