Widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero film scores ever recorded, Shirley Walker's music for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm stands as her masterpiece — an operatic, film noir-inspired tour de force that sweeps across the darkness of Gotham with power, romance, and intensity. Walker had previously served as conductor and additional orchestrator on Danny Elfman's score for the 1989 Batman feature before stepping into a central role on Batman: The Animated Series — a groundbreaking crime saga that permanently raised the bar for longform animated storytelling. Her work on the series earned her an Emmy nomination, and she was also commissioned to compose a new main theme for Batman that carried through later episodes of the show.
Originally developed as a made-for-TV movie, the cult classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was given a theatrical release on Christmas Day 1993, landing between Seasons 1 and 2 of Batman: The Animated Series.
